What is Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)?

Static recording

DBS or Deep Brain Stimulation is the use of high frequency stimulation at specific sites in the brain to over ride the abnormal brain activity causing abnormal movements of the body. Some people refer to this technique as a "Brain Pacemaker". This technique helps to control conditions such as Essential Tremor, Parkinson's Disease, Dystonia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Seizure Disorders, Obesity, as well as other conditions. Unlike ablative (radiofrequency lesioning) procedures, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a non-destructive procedure. Optimizing the effects continue after surgery and is non-invasive. Each side of the person is independently optimized. We will use real patient examples with patients who have Essential Tremor or Parkinson's Disease to help you understand the surgical process.
