Deep brain Stimulation and Hospital Stay

Surgery usually takes place in two stages

Picture of a Hospital

STAGE I: The Deep Brain Stimulator Electrodes are placed with intra-operative testing. The patient is intermittently sedated for this procedure, but needs to be awake for the testing. The patient is watched in the hospital overnight and goes home the next morning.

STAGE II: One to two weeks later the person returns as an outpatient and has the battery (pulse generator) placed. This can be done with sedation or the patient can be asleep. He or she usually goes home the same day. Several outpatient follow-up programming sessions will be needed to optimize the DBS system.
